Welcome to the Headquarters Company area of our battalion web site. I am glad you have taken the time to visit this site and our unit specifically. You are visiting one of the best battalions in the entire United States Army National Guard. We have been recognized on a regional and national level for our high state of combat readiness and training accomplishments. Headquarters Company provides critical support to this prestigious unit. Our soldiers train and perform their duties in order to contribute to the continued future success of the battalion. The unit training is both challenging and rewarding. Again, I want to welcome you to Headquarters Company, the 3/116th Infantry Battalion, the 29th Infantry Division, and the Virginia Army National Guard.
Sincerely,
Captain Steve Delahunty
Headquarters Company Commander
The main focus for the entire training year is the annual training (AT). The location of AT is Fort A.P. Hill and Fort Pickett Virginia. During AT the entire battalion will participate in a large scale Division tactical exercise. In addition to team building events conducted during AT, we will make extensive use of other team building training events. We are also orienting our training on our Annual Training 1999 which will be at the National Training Center (NTC) Fort Irwin CA from 9-22 May 1999.

This gives guidance, planning, and dates for TY98 company training meetings. All platoon leaders and platoon sergeants are required to attend. Staff section senior NCOs are encouraged to participate as well. The uniform is BDUs. Participants should prepare for the meeting and plan to be fully involved. The time and effort that we put into these meetings will pay-off during drill.
The training meetings will generally be the Tuesday night just prior to the drill date. The training meetings will start at 1930 hours. Maintenance (COMPAC) meetings start 30 minutes earlier at 1900hrs. We will also try to hold short training planning sessions at the unit Armory on the Sunday evening of each drill after the final formation.

- Leaders must plan training.
- Do not just hit the ground and expect the soldiers to wait for your planning.
- Train to standard and task, not to time.
- Always make time for rehearsals.
- If retraining is necessary, do it!
- If retraining is necessary, rehearsals will also be necessary.
- Conduct and use information from after action reviews and brief backs.
- Never train without concern for safety.
- Always integrate common tasks, NCOs track performance.
- Make use of handy reference materials.
(checklist and guidance)
- Include new guidelines from higher command, especially new or unscheduled requirements.
- Keep in mind the G-A-R time management system. Green is prime time training, amber is mission oriented training, an red is support oriented training. Examples include an FTX - green, annual briefings - red, weapons qual - green, CTT - amber. Green means maximize attendance, minimize admin detractors. Red means work on admin areas if needed. Amber means a balance of the two.
- Review of pre-execution checks for training scheduled.
