Retention Bonus

PREVIOUS SITUATION

The bonus was previously for $2,500 if the soldier had under 10 years of service and was MOSQ and met several other minor stipulations. Basically, if the soldier met all the criteria, mainly being under 10 years of service, he would get a $3,000 bonus for re-enlisting for 3 years. That would be paid as $1,250 initially on his ETS date and then $416.66 at the end of each the three years. There was no bonus for 6 years. A soldier was only eligible for one re-enlistment bonus in his career with the VaARNG.

NEW SITUATION

The bonus is now also $2,500. But the soldier only has to have under 14 years of service. There are still the MOSQ and several other minor stipulations. Basically, if the soldier meets all the criteria, mainly being under 14 years of service, he will get a $2,500 bonus for re-enlisting for 3 years. That is paid as $1,250 initially on his ETS date and then $1,250 at the end of 3 years. There is still no bonus for 6 years. If the soldier re-enlists for another 3 years at the end of the first 3-year re-enlistment, he receives another $2,000 bonus. That is paid $1,000 at his ETS date and $1,000 at the end of 3 years. If the soldier is past the 14 year service mark he cannot get the second bonus.

This new bonus is effective immediately. Also if you have soldiers who re-enlisted since 17 November 97 and did not receive a bonus because they were over 10 years of service but under 14 years, they can re-do their paperwork and get the bonus, have them see your PAC section. If a soldier in the above situation re-enlisted for one-year you can advise him to change that to 3 so he can receive the bonus as well.
